The Bahá'í Institute for Higher Education (BIHE) was founded in 1987 in response to the Iranian government's continuing campaign to deny Iranian Bahá'ís access to higher education. The BIHE offers 38 university-level programs across 5 faculties and continues to develop and deliver academic programs in Sciences, Engineering, Business Management, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Faced with unrelenting religious persecution involving a wide range of human rights violations, including systematic denial of access to higher education, BIHE developed several unique features which have become its defining strengths. Courses delivered at the outset by correspondence, soon complemented by in-person classes and tutoring. Later on, this was accompanied by leading-edge communication and education technologies. In addition, an affiliated global faculty (AGF) has been established comprised of hundreds of accredited professors from universities outside Iran who assist BIHE as researchers, teachers and consultants.

The need to create a new university for those who were denied access to higher education captivated the talents and minds of exceptional faculty and staff from within Iran. For thirty years they have dedicated their efforts to building an exemplary institution and cultivating a student body prepared for fulfilling careers, future study, and social responsibility. BIHE provides its students with the necessary knowledge and skills to not only persevere and succeed in their academic and professional pursuits, but to be active agents of change for the betterment of the world.

These unique strengths of BIHE, together with the top-ranking marks of its students, have helped BIHE graduates secure graduate studies at over 98 prestigious universities and colleges in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia (India).

Undergraduate Program

BIHE students have the opportunity to study a wide range of courses and programs in the natural sciences, engineering, the social sciences and the humanities. A core curriculum which permeates all degree programs also provides a solid interdisciplinary foundation in the liberal arts. It acts as a central component of one’s academic experience and enables the student to examine the unity of learning and how the various fields of study serve to complement each other.

Graduate Program

BIHE offers a unique graduate-level educational experience incorporating both face-to-face and online educational opportunities. BIHE offers 15 academic and professional master’s degree programs. Each program is based on international standards; courses are taught by accomplished faculty and professionals with distinguished academic achievements.

Associate Programs

BIHE is a comprehensive institution that provides tertiary education offering five Associate Degrees with vocational and career orientations. An Associate Degree is equivalent to two years or seventy semester credit hours of academic study. Associate Degrees consist of broad general education and concentration requirements.

Faculty

The initial faculty of BIHE was largely comprised of Baha’i professionals (e.g. physicians, dentists, lawyers, engineers) and former university professors, who once held teaching positions at government-run universities in Iran, but who because of their affiliation with the Bahá’í Faith and the increasing systematic oppression of the Bahá’ís in that country, had been expelled from universities. This group of volunteer professors and instructors, many of whom are still with BIHE, formed the foundation for an ever-growing body of other volunteers inside and outside the country.

Faculty

The initial faculty of BIHE was largely comprised of Bahá'í professionals (e.g. physicians, dentists, lawyers, engineers) and former university professors, who once held teaching positions at government-run universities in Iran, but who because of their affiliation with the Bahá'í Faith and the increasing systematic oppression of the Bahá’ís in that country, had been expelled from universities. This group of volunteer professors and instructors, many of whom are still with BIHE, formed the foundation for an ever-growing body of other volunteers inside and outside the country.

Since the first BIHE students graduated, inspired by the spirit and devotion of the founding professors, they began to join the BIHE faculty and staff. Many completed their postgraduate studies at the finest universities around the world and returned to Iran. This new young group of professors and educators, which now form a significant segment of the faculty, has guaranteed the sustainable growth of BIHE faculty.

Since 2005, the online component of BIHE has allowed a growing international body of volunteer university professors outside Iran, known as the Affiliated Global Faculty (AGF), to join efforts with their colleagues and assistants inside the country. The AGF comprises professors holding PhD degrees, who work and reside in North America, Europe, Australia, Africa, Latin America and Asia. Indeed, the diversity of the teaching staff is one of the unique and impressive features of this university.

This remarkable team of active volunteers, which now has grown to over 700 instructors and professors, most of them residing in the country, has tirelessly devoted its expertise over the last three decades to the development and implementation of a top notch university curriculum in various programs.
